Music Standards & Benchmarks

Standard 1:         Performs alone and with others a varied repertoire of music

PreK: 

  • 1.1       Sings familiar songs
  • 1.2              Distinguishes vocal sounds (yell, whisper, sing)

K-2:    

  • 1.1       Sings simple familiar songs (nursery rhymes, traditional children’s songs)
  • 1.2       Distinguishes vocal sounds (yell, whisper, sing, man, woman)
  • 1.3       Distringuishes between high, low, fast, slow, short, long sounds
  • 1.4       Echoes short rhythms and melodic patterns

3-5:     

  • 1.1       Performs on pitch, in rhythm and with appropriate dynamics and maintains a steady tempo
  • 1.2       Knows a varied repertoire of music representing diverse genres and styles
  • 1.3       Performs simple melodic, rhythmic and chordal patterns on classroom instruments

6-8:     

  • 1.1       Performs in multiple parts
  • 1.2       Demonstrates proper vocal/instrumental technique
  • 1.3       Demonstrates rehearsal and performance etiquette
  •  1.4       Understands aesthetic connection to music

9-12:   

  • 1.1       Perform a varied repertoire of musical literature with expression and technical accuracy at a moderate level of difficulty (e.g., attention to phrasing and interpretation, various meters and rhythms in a variety of keys)
  • 1.2       Performs music written in multiple parts, with and without accompaniment
  • 1.3       Uses ensemble skills (e.g., balance, intonation, rhythmic unity)

Standard 2:         Reads and notates music

PreK:              Not Applicable           

K-2:    

  • 2.1       Knows standard symbols to notate simple meter, rhythm (quarter note, quarter rest, eighth notes, sixteenth notes) and dynamics (piano, mezzo piano, forte, mezzo forte)

3-5:     

  • 2.1       Reads whole notes, half notes, dotted half notes, quarter notes, eighth notes, sixteenth notes, quarter rests, whole rests, half rests in simple meter
  • 2.2       Uses a system to read simple treble and bass clef notation
  • 2.3       Knows symbols and terms referring to dynamics, tempo and articulation

6-8:     

  • 2.1       Develops music literacy (rhythm, meter, pitch, musical terms, score markings, musical vocabulary)
  • 2.2       Sight reads simple melodies

9-12:   

  • 2.1       Reads whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth notes and rests as well as dotted notes and rest of those values in a variety of meter signatures
  • 2.2       Knows symbols and traditional terms referring to dynamics (piano, forte, crescendo, diminuendo), temp (andante, moderato, allegro, ritardando, accelerando), and articulation (staccato, legato, marcato, accent)

Standard 3:         Understands basic musical form/compositional techniques

PreK: 

  • 3.1       Demonstrates body movement to music

K-2:    

  • 3.1       Responds with movement to specific musical characteristics (swaying, skipping, dramatic play)
  • 3.2       Identifies simple musical forms (AB, call & response)
  • 3.3       Knows personal preference for musical styles

3-5:     

  • 3.1       Identifies sounds of a variety of instruments and voices
  • 3.2       Knows appropriate musical terminology for various notations, instruments, voices and performances

6-8:     

  • 3.1       Identifies specific musical events (meter change, key change) when listening to music
  • 3.2       Understands basics of how harmony, melody and balance affect music

9-12:   

  • 3.1       Knows how the elements of music are used to achieve unity and variety, tension and release and balance in music compositions
  • 3.2       Uses the elements of music for expressive effect (pitch, rhythm, harmony, timbre, texture, form)
  • 3.3       Understands the technical vocabulary of music (Italian terms, some German and French terms)
  • 3.4       Understands the ranges and traditional uses of various sound sources (voices, acoustic instruments, electronic instruments)

Standard 4:         Understands relationships between music, history and culture

PreK: 

  • 4.1       Knows and models appropriate audience behavior

K-2:    

  • 4.1       Knows characteristics that make certain music suitable for specific uses (movies, symphony, choral works)
  • 4.2       Knows and models appropriate audience behavior

3-5:     

  • 4.1       Identifies music from various historical periods and cultures
  • 4.2       Understands the roles of musicians in various music settings and cultures (orchestra, choral, solo, ensemble)
  • 4.3       Knows and models appropriate audience behavior

6-8:     

  • 4.1       Acquires historical knowledge of works studied
  • 4.2       Understands how history affects composers and music
  • 4.3       Knows and models appropriate audience behavior

9-12:   

  • 4.1       Understands distinguishing characteristics of representative music genres and styles from a variety of cultures
  • 4.2       Understands characteristics that cause various musical works to be considered exemplary
  • 4.3       Understands the functions music serves, the role of musicians, and conditions under which music is typically performed in various cultures
  • 4.4       Classifies unfamiliar but representative aural examples of music (by genre, style, historical period, culture)
  • 4.5       Know sources of American music genres (swing, Broadway musicals, blues) and the evolution of these genres and musicians associated with them
  • 4.6       Knows various roles that musicians perform (entertainer, teacher, transmitter of cultural traditions) and representative individuals who have functioned in these roles
